  23. INTRODUCTION:

  25. This is the A.S.C Field Guide, a compendium of short reviews
  26. of the wide variety of fan-generated fictional works based
  27. in the Star Trek universe. The Guide was conceived in an
  28. effort to get a handle on the megabytes of fanfic that exist
  29. on the net and elsewhere. Readers of Trek fanfic will
  30. hopefully find this a useful reference for identifying the
  31. best works within their favorite subgenres of Trek, and
  32. writers will, perhaps, benefit from the feedback on their
  33. writings.

  36. FICTION SOURCES:

  38. Most of the works cited here are to be found at the Trek
  39. fiction archive site maintained at ftp.cis.ksu.edu by Joe
  40. Young. See his periodic postings to the alt.startrek.creative
  41. newsgroup for more details. If you are unfamiliar with ftp
  42. access, consult with net experts at your local site, or see
  43. Joe's instructions for accessing the archive via a
  44. mailserver. Stories are also posted periodically to the
  45. a.s.c newsgroup.

  48. HOW TO CONTRIBUTE:
  49.  
  50. This review guide is intended as a net community effort. The
  51. reviewers are simply Trek fans like yourself, who have read
  52. others' fiction and wanted to comment on it. If you want to
  53. become a reviewer, just send a review of one or more pieces
  54. of fanfic you've read, following the same format as presented
  55. below. Call them like you see them (but don't be mean), and
  56. be specific in both your criticism and your praise. Reviews
  57. should be sent to one of the Field Guide editors:

  70. REVIEW FORMAT:
  71.  
  72. The format used below in reviewing each story is pretty much
  73. self-explanatory, but will be explained anyway:
  74.   - Line 1 is the story title.
  75.   - Line 2 is the pathname of the file. KSU is the abbreviation
  76.         for the site ftp.cis.ksu.edu; other sites will receive
  77.         their own abbreviations as they are included in the guide.
  78.   - Line 3 is information on the author and year of "publication".
  79.   - Line 4 is the classification of Trek era and story type.
  80.   - Line 5 (if present) indicates if the story is incomplete.
  81.   - A short synopsis and evaluation follows. When more than one
  82.         reviewer has commented on a story, the comments are
  83.         merged together.
  84.   - Last comes a 0-10 ranking of the overall story quality. When
  85.         more than one review has been submitted, the rankings
  86.         are averaged together.

  136. a Trek story. Q tosses JLP back to 1991 Texas, where he gets a job as
  137. a short-order cook. No, it's not a parody. Really, really good
  138. character story. Beautifully written, deep, emotional, good touches of
  139. humor throughout. A must-read for fans of the Captain.

  242. Darth Vader and the Death Star? Editing a bit sketchy, dialog flat at

  546. storyline, and more verb tenses per sentence than you've ever seen.

  575. The "main plot" could be somewhat better defined, and tighter editing
  576. would be nice, but still an eminently readable net.novel. Download it

  630. BWAHAHAHAHA! I nearly fell off my chair laughing, and I've never
  631. even seen MST3K, so I didn't quite get some of the jokes in the
  632. beginning. Absolutely *HYSTERICAL*. Tom and the robots poke fun at
  633. bad fanfics in general and one by C. Walck in particular. Do
  634. not read this in a public computer cluster unless you don't mind

  929. Series. A bizarre combination of esoteric baseball trivia (everyone
  930. know who Guererro and Steve Sax were?) and lengthy explanations
  931. of the most basic baseball concepts. If you know nothing about
  932. baseball, you won't get it. If you know something, you won't get the
  933. allusions but you'll be irritated by the lengthy technical explanations.
  934. If you're a big fan, the explanations will REALLY irk you AND the
  935. allusions are all explained to death as well. None of the characters
  936. are consistent, Q is just a deus ex machina, and the baseball wasn't
  937. really engrossing either. It's also irritating that the author informs
  938. you that this is a really funny parody at the beginning of the story.

  1089. to do any more stories with telepaths. Silly Pocket. The Enterprise-D
  1090. arrives at a colony world, finds a disturbing situation, and loses
  1091. Captain Picard (oops ;). A prominent role is played by Etain, member
  1092. of a telepathic race threatened by the colony and its twisted leader.
  1093. Gripping story with lots of twists and turns, true to all the characters,
  1094. and a wonderful exploration of the concept that all sentient beings,
  1095. not just Terrans, are human. I literally cried over parts of this.
